Begin rant.
This column from the WSJ online earlier in the month is a thought provoking read with some eye opening numbers. Stephen Moore is spot on, my comrades. The economic road down will continue until commerce and industry employment gets back to outnumbering government workers at all levels of government. It's the basic revenue/cost equation that people around this town don't like to or are unable to acknowledge. Hey, I understand the personal paradigm and Machiavellian thing. But, the reality is that Atlas simply can't support the weight any longer. He hath shrugged my friend and John Galt has left the building (and the state . . . e.g. Boeing). Actually, it's more than a shrug. Atlas has been crushed like an ant under a burgundy Wing Tip. Government jobs, entitlement programs, and taxes are costs and increased regulations (by lawyers who have taken over our government at all levels) make it an even tougher road to hoe for the producers. This is why I, frankly, don't give a shit anymore. I'm tired of the political debate and the left vs. right crap. It's a farce and a charade. Until the bloated government is reduced by at least another 50% (to start), term limits implemented and all lawyers are removed and banned from future political races and public service jobs, forget about it. There's nothing to discuss. It's a sinking ship until the reset button is depressed and the U.S. Republic (with it's Constitution) is restored. The cuts they are arguing over this last week are laughable. They don't even begin to address the problem. A government shut down? That would have been nice. Really, don't expect me to get all wound up and glued to CSPAN, FOX, CNN etc. ranting and raving with Glenn Beck or John Stossel (God Bless 'em). No, I won't hold my breath. I cancelled the stupid cable. Just let me know if they figure out and broadcast where John Galt went. Meanwhile, I'll be ready for the collapse and His return (and I don't mean John Galt's return). Will you? I hope so. Get ready, 'cuz here it comes.
End rant.
We've Become a Nation of Takers, Not Makers
More Americans work for the government than in manufacturing, farming, fishing, forestry, mining and utilities combined.
By STEPHEN MOORE
If you want to understand better why so many states—from New York to Wisconsin to California—are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, consider this depressing statistic: Today in America there are nearly twice as many people working for the government (22.5 million) than in all of manufacturing (11.5 million). This is an almost exact reversal of the situation in 1960, when there were 15 million workers in manufacturing and 8.7 million collecting a paycheck from the government.
It gets worse. More Americans work for the government than work in construction, farming, fishing, forestry, manufacturing, mining and utilities combined. We have moved decisively from a nation of makers to a nation of takers.
